World War II veteran leads pledge at East Syracuse elementary school

EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — World War II veteran Sal Buonocore just turned 97 a few days ago.
And for the past three years, he’s been receiving mail on his birthday from elementary school students. Letters that he will cherish for a lifetime.
On Friday, June 14, Sal led the students at Woodland Elementary School, in East Syracuse, in the Pledge of Allegiance during the school’s Flag Day celebration.
“I don’t think I am special. I’m just a guy who served his country, and I’m glad to serve this country,” Buonocore said.
But as these students learned about Sal’s time in the service, they were inspired to stay connected.
“Think of kind words to say to him because he is older, and I just really appreciate having him here,” said fourth-grade student, Bea Roux.
This interaction has not only been meaningful for Buonocore but has also impacted the students as well.
“They’re still learning. I learned, but I can’t use what I learned,” Buonocore said. “They have an opportunity to make a better country out of this and do creative things.”
He wants to leave his new friends with an important message.
“Your innovations or creativity is a part of what you do, no matter what you do,” said Buonocore.
A piece of advice that will carry on for generations.
