Early look at the debate coming up on NewsChannel 9

SYRACUSE N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Airing on NewsChannel 9 at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, is a Democrat debate on the 22nd Congressional seat. Andrew Donovan, the debate moderator, gives us an early look and asks about a controversial attack ad.

What you’ll see on TV tonight, is a response to the ad you’ve seen on TV the past few weeks. An attack from Sarah Klee Hood’s campaign, hitting opponent John Mannion on corporate donations impacting his State Senate votes.

In the debate Klee Hood was asked about the message, which some call misleading.

“I would hardly call the ad misleading. It has been fact-checked by independent sources, such as Emily’s List,” said Klee Hood. ”He has accepted money from the National Grid, from Exelon, but let’s go further too. He’s receiving from Eli Lilly, JP Morgan, then his votes show favorability to the corporations.”

“This is a misrepresentation of what’s out there. There are not thousands and thousands of dollars as stated. There’s a very small amount of the support I’ve received in elections, nothing this election, except a disabilities provider and mental health provider,” said Mannion.

The same ad goes after Mannion’s stance on abortion restrictions, taking a two-second clip of a longer student interview. What’s cut out, is Mannion adding that he means late-term abortion limits already in place in New York.
