Your Stories Q&A: $7.9 million construction project underway on Old Liverpool Road

TOWN OF SALINA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – You ask, we answer!
Question: What are construction crews doing on Old Liverpool Road and when will it wrap up?
Onondaga County estimates about 14,000 people drive Old Liverpool Road in Salina every day. This popular route is getting a major facelift.
Construction on the $7.9 million federally funded project began in April. It calls for the reconstruction of Old Liverpool Road from Buckley Road to Electronics Parkway. That’s about a 1.4-mile stretch in the Town of Salina.
“This $7.9 million Federally Funded project is addressing the safety deficiencies, improving capacity, providing accommodation for pedestrians and bicyclists, addressing drainage deficiencies, and preserving the pavement of Old Liverpool Road. The pavement will be widened for the addition of a two-way left turn lane to reduce collisions, additions of sidewalks, and a shared use travel lane to improve accessibility for pedestrians and bicyclists,” The county stated in a press release on the project.
This construction project has been in the works for years. In a 2021 presentation, contractors said the two-way left turn lane and sidewalk wouldn’t cover the entire 1.4 mile stretch under construction. Those features would start at School Road and continue to Electronics Parkway.
OCWA and National Grid are also part of this project. OCWA’s Geoff Miller said his team is replacing about 6,000′ of watermain in the area. He said some of the pipes being replaced are 90 years old.
When will the project be completed?
No firm date is being given by the county. The Onondaga County DOT told NewsChannel 9, work should wrap up by the end of construction season, before the winter weather arrives.
While work is underway, the road is still open to traffic, just be prepared for single-lane closures.
The county DOT said those looking for more details on the project, can view the plans at the Salina Town Hall.
