Strong storms possible this afternoon

SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) — After a beautiful morning across Central New York, our weather is turning more unsettled this afternoon with scattered showers and a few thunderstorms expected to develop.

Will there be severe weather today?

There is a threat for severe storms, yes. However, the risk is low: a level 1 out of 5. This means that while widespread severe weather is not anticipated, any storm that develops has the potential to pack a punch.

What are the main severe weather risks?

In addition to heavy rainfall and frequent lightning, there could be some damaging wind gusts around 60 miles per hour in a few storms this afternoon. Wind gusts that strong are enough to cause some tree damage and even some power outages.

There is also a risk for some isolated large hail in today’s storms. The threat for tornadoes is luckily very low.

When are storms expected?

The prime window for showers and storms will be from about 2 p.m. this afternoon until about 9 p.m. this evening.

We look to dry out quickly tonight, and keep the dry weather going on Sunday.
