Oneida County fire leaves one person dead

One body recovered from fire, roads shut down

ANNSVILLE, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — A fire in Annsville on Thursday, February 29 left one person dead and shut down several roads in the town, according to Oneida County Sheriffs.

According to Sheriff Robert Maciol, deputies were called to assist with a fire investigation on Mill Road in the Town of Annsville. The fire reportedly broke out at approximately 2:15 PM and was finally found by a neighbor who reported smoke coming from the house.

Fire crews were called from Taberg, McConnellsville, North Bay and Vienna. When they arrived, the single-story structure was fully engulfed in flames. Mill Road between Wheeler Hill Road and Hallstead Road was closed for several hours. It has since been re-opened to traffic.

After the fire was brought under control, further investigation discovered a body within the residence. Sheriffs say the name of the victim will be released after a positive identification is made.

Oneida County Sheriffs were also assisted on the scene by the New York State Police, New York State Fire, and AmCare Ambulance of Rome.

The cause of the fire and the identity of the remains that were recovered remain under investigation.
