Syracuse finished warmest February ever!

SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) – February 2024 in Syracuse will go into the record books as the warmest ever. Here are some of the other details for the second month of the year.

February set an all-time record

February was another winter month with well above normal temperatures, and it ended up being the warmest February in Syracuse since records have been kept in Syracuse starting in 1902!

The month ran 9 degrees above normal, and the average temperature was a higher average than what we would expect during an average month of March! We broke the old February record by almost a full degree.

There were three daily record highs during the month, highlighted by 71 on February 27, which was only the third time Syracuse had been in the 70s in February.

Monthly snowfall ends with a dumping

We didn’t see any measurable snow for the first 12 days of the month, and it was about to be one of Syracuse’s least snowy Februarys on record (using the airport records since 1949)

However, cue the ‘Leap Day’ lake effect snow.

The 10.0” that fell on the last day of the month was a record for any Leap Day and pushed our February snow total to 17.3”

We head into March still five feet below normal in seasonal snowfall.

A rather dry month, but not to worry

February 2024 was our driest winter month.

The combination of rain and melted snow came out to just 1.37,” which is a little more than an inch below normal.

Should we be concerned about this dry weather? Not at this point.

We are coming off two very wet months in December and January, so we are still running a surplus of about two and a third inches since December 1. This is good news as we head closer and closer to the beginning of the growing season. There are no parts of the immediate Central New York region in drought conditions.
