Orange Ranked #5 in Preseason Poll

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse opens the season ranked No. 5 in the ILWomen/IWLCA Preseason Poll released on Monday, January 30. The Orange posted a 15-6 record in 2022 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals.
 
Syracuse is one of three teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference ranked in the preseason top five. Defending national champion North Carolina is No. 1 after receiving 22 first-place votes. Maryland earned two first-place votes and 634 points to take the No. 2 spot, while last year’s national runner-up Boston College is third with three first-place votes and 613 points. Northwestern is No. 4 (599 pts.), followed by the Orange (574 pts.).
 
Head coach Kayla Treanor‘s team returns four of its top five scorers from a year ago, including Tewaaraton Award finalist Meaghan Tyrrell. She recorded 111 points on 78 goals and 33 assists in 2022 and ranked sixth in the nation in goals and seventh in points. Defensively, ‘Cuse welcomes back its leaders in ground balls in senior Bianca Chevarie and caused turnovers in junior Katie Goodale. In addition, goalkeepers Kimber Hower and Delaney Sweiter are back after both seeing time last season.
 
Syracuse will face each of the top four teams in the preseason poll and nine of the top 20. The Orange open the 2023 campaign against No. 4 Northwestern in the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday, February 11 at noon before taking on Maryland at home on Friday, February 17 at 3 p.m.
