Mitski Lands First Billboard Songs Chart No. 1 With ‘The Only Heartbreaker’
Mitski reaches No. 1 for the first time on a Billboard songs chart with “The Only Heartbreaker,” which crowns the Adult Alternative Airplay tally dated March 12.
The track is the lead single from Laurel Hell, Mitski’s sixth studio album. The set debuted as Mitski’s first No. 1 on the Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums charts dated Feb. 19 and has earned 80,000 equivalent album units to date. The singer-songwriter previously reached the top 10 on the Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums surveys with Be the Cowboy, which reached Nos. 7 and 6, respectively, in September 2018.
Mitski is the fourth act to earn a first Adult Alternative Airplay in 2022, and the third in a row, after alt-J (“U&ME,” March 5) and COIN (“Chapstick,” Feb. 26); Band of Horses first achieved the feat this year (“Crutch,” Jan. 8).
Comparatively, only one act – The Marias – led the list for the first time in 2021. Of all those acts, Mitski, COIN and The Marias have all reigned with their first charted titles on the ranking.
Concurrently, “Heartbreaker” bullets at No. 36 (after reaching No. 34) on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart with 865,000 audience impressions, a 5% boost, according to MRC Data.
