Zara Larsson Acquires Back Catalog Masters, Launches New Label Sommer House
Swedish pop singer Zara Larsson has officially acquired the masters to her back catalog and launched a new record label, called Sommer House, in partnership with Sony, both the singer and the label confirmed today (June 8). Moving forward, Larsson’s releases on Sommer House will be licensed through Epic Records in the U.S. and distributed through Sony Music Sweden.
The announcement marks the end of Larsson’s 11-year relationship with Swedish independent label TEN Music Group and its CEO Ola Håkansson, with whom she signed in 2011. Larsson was able to reclaim her masters under what a press release referred to as “a unique agreement” between her and TEN.
“I really want to say thank you to Ola and everyone at TEN for giving me the opportunity to break out as an artist and helping me start my career,” the 24-year-old Larsson said in a statement. “You are now also making something happen that is so, so rare for a woman in the music industry — the capability to own my own catalogue. With that it makes perfect sense that I would start my own record company. I very much look forward to my future and to a continued collaboration with Sony as well.”
In a tweet, Larsson added, “I own my own catalog of music im so thankful for everyone involved who made this possible! Make that money girllllllllllll”
TEN released Larsson’s debut album, 1, in 2014, after a few successful EPs, then brought Larsson to Sony, where she signed a deal with Epic for her subsequent albums, 2017’s So Good and 2021’s Poster Girl. To date, her catalog has racked up 1.1 million equivalent album units in the United States, according to Luminate, as well as 1.62 billion on-demand audio and video streams in the U.S.
“This is a natural and exciting development in Zara’s continuing music career,” Håkansson said in a statement. “We have worked together for more than 10 fantastic, eventful years and Zara is, despite her young age, an established and respected international artist with extensive experience of the international music scene today. It is going to be really exciting to follow Zara’s ongoing music career. I wish her the best of luck, and I am convinced the she is going to achieve all her musical dreams and get to show her amazing artistry on the worlds biggest stages.”
Epic chairman/CEO Sylvia Rhone added, “Zara has been a cornerstone artist for Epic Records, and we are privileged and excited to be involved in the next chapter in her luscious career.”
