Igniting the Music Scene: BTS is Back

By Madison Sottile

K-pop superstars have returned to the stage in an attention-grabbing event in Seoul, South Korea. This weekend, BTS made their first appearance together since 2022 after the group went on a nearly 4-year hiatus due to mandatory military service in South Korea.

Leading up to the comeback performance, tickets were distributed in a raffle system in an attempt to avoid resellers and bots. The winners were able to enter the main viewing area.  The concert took place at Gwanghwamun Square, reaching 104,000 people in the vicinity. This was a massive turnout, despite being less than half the number of attendees city officials estimated. While in-person listeners were less than expected, 18.4 million people tuned into the Netflix live stream, making it the most-streamed live music event in Netflix history.

Their concert came to celebrate their newest release. The Friday, March 20th release “Arirang” quickly became the most-streamed album in a single day in 2026 on Spotify. The music has been described by the band as a love letter to their home country.
An upcoming world tour has already been announced for 2026. Spanning over 34 cities in Asia, the U.S., and Europe, 41 of their 82 shows have already sold out. Fans are excited to see what BTS will bring in their comeback, hopeful to learn about cultural experiences and hear nostalgic sounds. K-pop lovers are looking forward to the Netflix original documentary detailing the experience of the group’s anticipated return, premiering this Friday, March 27th.
