Let’s Rock and Roll!: The Official 2026 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominations

By: Olivia Woloz
Every year, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame holds an induction ceremony for the latest nominees. The induction process is similar to that of any award show where the artists are chosen by the Nominating Committee. Selections are based on the criteria that the artist’s first commercial release is at least 25 years old and had an influential impact on the music industry. Each year, the nominees span across a variety of genres and sounds including hip-hop, rap, heavy metal, pop, rock, and alternative. They are categorized into the different awards including Performer, Musical Excellence, Musical Influence, and the Ahmet Ertegun Award, a lifetime achievement award given to artists, producers, and record executives who have made a lasting impact on music. This year, 17 nominees will be recognized, 10 of whom are new at the ceremony. Some of these artists include Lauryn Hill, Jeff Buckley, Iron Maiden, Oasis, P!NK, and Billy Idol.
Once the nominees are chosen, the inductees can be announced. This information will be released sometime in April. The date of the ceremony has yet to be announced but it typically takes place in late fall. Along with the induction and award ceremony, there are also multiple performances that occur. Last year, performances were held by Doja Cat, Cyndi Lauper, Salt-N-Pepa, The Killers, and Teddy Swims. The ceremony is special to the music world and business as it not only recognizes artists for their influence and excellence but also labels the artists in an honorable way. John Sykes, a chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation stated that this year’s line up is a, “diverse list of talented nominees [that] recognizes the ever-evolving faces and sounds of Rock & Roll and its continued impact on youth culture”. This year specifically rewards artists of this generation’s youth and has a big impact on late 20th and early 21st century music.
This year’s nominees have had prominent roles in the music industry as acknowledged through their other awards and recognitions. Phil Collins, for example, has won a total of eight grammys including the most notable, Album of the Year, in 1985 for “No Jacket Required.” Lauryn Hill, famous solo artist and lead singer of the Fugees, made history when her album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” won Album of Year as well in 1999, being the first hip-hop album to do so. While also honoring the living and the continuation of their music, the induction also recognizes the influences who are no longer with us. This year being nominated are Luther Vandross who passed in 2005 and Jeff Buckley who left us in 1997. With Vandross selling around 25 million albums and Buckley whose debut “Grace” is critically acclaimed, both of these artists live on, whether inducted or not, for centuries to come.
