Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet’s new film about a professional table tennis player, is set to release on Christmas Day. The movie has a star-studded cast apart from Chalamet, including celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler, TheCreator, and even Kevin O’Leary from Shark Tank. However, what might put Marty Supreme further on the track ofsuccess is the entertaining, whimsical, and comedic marketing of the movie so far.
The trailer for Marty Supreme came out on August 13, when Chalamet posted it on his Instagram. After uploading his trailer, the actor truly began to let his creativity shine through in his movie promotion.
Possibly the most popular piece of promo on the internet right now was posted to Chalamet’s Instagram on Saturday, which he captioned “video93884728.mp4.” The video was formatted as a Zoom call with Chalamet and what appeared to be his marketing team. Despite the dull title and setup of the video, the content of the clip has had the internet, especially TikTok, in a chokehold.
The video, which was clearly put out as a promotional skit for Marty Supreme, features Chalamet presenting his bizarre and ridiculous advertising ideas to his team for the movie. These ideas include drenching the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower in a specific shade of orange, having his character on thousands of “Wheaties” boxes, and, most popularly online, placing the title of the movie on an orange blimp and flying it through the sky.
Besides these crazy ideas, which fans found sarcastically comedic because of Chalamet’s serious demeanor when presenting them to the team, the video has some hilarious one-liners that are being posted as TikTok videos. When telling the team his vision for the shade of orange used to promote Marty Supreme, Chalamet listed that it should be a “hard-core orange, corroded orange, falling apart orange, rusted orange.” He then screen-shared a picture of the color to the team, which was just a regular orange square. Later, when listing famous actors, fans found humor in the way Chalamet yelled “SCHWEP” in between each name.
Fans are still talking about the video days after its upload to Instagram, captioning their clips of Chalamet things like @marve1xedits TikTok post, “me thinking I’m onto something but I’m just on something.” The skit has had a massive media impact on the attention Marty Supreme has received, making it a clearly successful promotional tactic.
Chalamet has effectively utilized his Instagram as a marketing tool for Marty Supreme in other ways. In much of his recent content, people with orange tennis balls instead of their heads have appeared. These tennis ball-headed figures match the film’s theme of Chalamet’s character making it big in the table tennis world. Videos of Chalamet walking in person with a crowd of these figures have also gained traction on the internet.
