New owner of old Crucible plant hoping to hire for plans to reopen factory

GEDDES, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Without much notice about what the plans are for the old Crucible plant, “Now Hiring” signs have been placed on the property by its new owners.
On Aug. 28, a source familiar with the plans updated NewsChannel 9.
The companies named on the sign, OptiTorque Technologies and Lauter Metals, based in Penn Yann, previously did business with Crucible.
As Crucible was declaring bankruptcy, OptiTorque Technologies decided to buy the facility for its own business needs and to preserve the legacy of steel manufacturing at the historic plant.
Erasteel, a French company, bought Crucible’s active business and some equipment but had no interest in continuing operations in Geddes.
On the morning of Aug. 29, a second sign was being hung by crews designed to taken advantage of the heavily-trafficked State Fair.
The second sign indicates a need for electricians, machinists, engineers, technicians and mechanics. Neither sign offered a phone number or website to help applying for the jobs.
It’s not clear how much of the workforce lost their jobs through Crucible’s bankruptcy, how many hold-over employees are still employed or how many jobs need to be filled to resume operations at the plant.
