EF1 tornado confirmed to have touched down in Canastota

CANASTOTA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — National Weather Service meteorologists from Binghamton confirmed that an EF1 tornado moved through Canastota Tuesday, July 16, with top winds of 100 mph.

The tornado touched down just before 3:00 p.m. Tuesday between Barlow Street and the Conrail railroad tracks. The storm moved east and caused ‘severe’ damage to a number of houses on Barlow Street including ripping off roofs and blowing out garage doors and windows.

A man lost his life as Tuesday’s storm crossed Main Street.

The storm continued down Center Street, causing more damage to trees, roofs and power poles then crossed the Old Erie Canal before dissipating a little more than five minutes after it first touched down.

The storm was on the ground for about a mile and a half and, at times, had a width of 100 yards.

The storm then continued to the east and dropped an F2 tornado, which caused extensive damage in Rome.

This makes for a total of 16 tornadoes across New York State since Monday, July 15, 2024.
