Record setting warmth for first half of year
SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) – With June now in the record books we can officially say it was the hottest first half of the year in Syracuse history.
The average temperature from January through June was 48.5 degrees which is just a few tenths of a degree warmer than 2012. Three of the five warmest starts to a year have happened since 2012.
Records in Syracuse go back to 1902.
We had our warmest February on record, but March, May and June ended up in the Top 10 warmest of their respective months and January and April in the Top 20.
June was seventh straight warmer than normal month and the 9th warmest month in the last 10 months.
Oddly enough, this warm start may be bucking the changing climate here in Syracuse. The latest 30 year averages calculated after 2020 shows there is a longer term cooling trend for the months of February, March and April in Syracuse.
