Vacant house catches on fire on Wayne Street in Syracuse’s Hawley-Green neighborhood

SYRACUSE, N.Y (WSYR-TV) — On Thursday, June 27, at 1:44 p.m., Syracuse firefighters were alerted by a 911 call of a possible fire at 128 Wayne Street in the city’s Hawley-Green neighborhood.
When firefighters arrived on scene, they immediately started trying to put out the fire. While fighters were trying to put out the blaze, additional firefighters were called to search the house for anyone trapped inside.
The search found that all floors of the building were empty and the home was determined to be vacant, said SFD.
The firefighters’ search also found that the fire and smoke were coming from the basement.
The basement fire posed unique challenges for firefighters, and the limited access to the fire meant that the crews had to use stairs that were filled with smoke and heated by gas from fire to put it out.
They were able to put out the fire in roughly 20 minutes and stop it from spreading to the rest of the house, SFD said.
The basement of the home suffered fire, smoke and water damage, with the first and second floors also suffering smoke and water damage.
Investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing. There were no injuries reported to civilians or to fire department personnel, according to SFD.
