Treatment of hydrilla on Cayuga Lake

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — As part of the ongoing effort to get rid of hydrilla, an invasive aquatic plant from Cayuga Lake, the United States Army Corps of Engineers, along with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, is planning to apply the aquatic herbicides fluridone and chelated copper in the vicinity of Wells College Bay this summer.

Latest local news

The application of fluridone will begin the week of June 24 and a total of 7 fluridone treatments will occur between June and August with one potential chelated copper treatment in August.

The United States Army Corps of Engineers will be posting signs along the lake at public access points when the herbicides are applied.

There will be no restrictions in place for drinking, fishing, swimming, boating, or domestic use of treated water at the levels at which the fluridone will be applied.

Water that contains fluridone, however, should not be used for sensitive greenhouse and nursery plants, newly seeded lawns, and some vegetable plants.

The county’s health department will conduct water quality monitoring of the public
drinking water and the public bathing beach, when the beach is open and during treatment
periods.

The 2024 sampling results will be posted on the Cayuga County Health Department
website when they become available.
