Early morning storm causes damage in Chittenango

CHITTENANGO, NY (WSYR-TV) – Neighbors in Chittenango are cleaning up the damage left behind by a powerful early morning thunderstorm on Wednesday.

Coming right in the middle of what is likely our first heat wave of the year, the atmosphere was primed to produce a storm with gusty winds and heavy rain.
Darlene Titchener was looking out her front windows at her neighbor’s trees along Clay Hill Road when the storm hit.
Titchener said, “The wind picked up, and I thought, ‘those trees are gonna come down.’”
The focus quickly turned to one of her own trees, landing on her husband’s truck in the family’s backyard. Behind the truck, a trailer was pushed back about fifty feet by the wind, and their trampoline carried away even farther.
Just down the road, Amy Kattrein was woken up by the storm and went outside to cover up her porch furniture. Then, she witnessed the unexpected.
Check out this video Amy shared with NewsChannel 9, showing the roof blowing off of her pole barn and crashing into her she shed.
Kattrein told us, “At first I didn’t think of anything, and then I kind of pan over towards the she shed and that’s when I saw the roof […] coming off the pole barn.”
A few minutes away, we caught up with Chittenango’s mayor, Louie Cianfrocco, as crews worked to restore power on Lake Street. He was taking his garbage out this morning when the storm hit, and witnessed lightning strike a power pole in front of his home.
The cleanup process in Chittenango continues amid the hot and humid stretch of weather we find ourselves in this week. Kattrein is quickly moving forward with a watchful eye to the sky with other storms potentially popping up this week, but a positive attitude despite the damage on her property.
She said, “Could be worse, but, you know, thank goodness it wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been.”
