Police say bomb threats emailed to local high schools are not credible

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office tells NewsChannel 9 that bomb threats made to local high schools have been deemed not credible.

At least 100 staff members across 10 Central New York school districts have received these threats in their emails, according to local superintendents briefed on the investigation.

“The threat named F-M High School and nine other district high schools, claiming a bomb had been placed at two locations,” the Fayetteville-Manlius School District alerted its community.

Westhill Schools Superintendent Steve Dunham emailed his district, writing: “The source has been identified as coming from overseas and matches similar messages sent to other districts in New York State. The aim appears to be disrupting the operation of our school buildings.”

He adds that school officers, administrators and custodial staff will do additional sweeps of the building.

“The aim of this specific email bomb threat hoax, that ten different school districts received, was to cause a disruption to the operation of the school buildings,” East Syracuse Minoa Superintendent Donna DeSiato wrote in an email to her district. ESM did not receive any of the threats.

The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office is investigating at least five of these calls within its jurisdiction. State Police is also investigating.

A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office says the emails contained typos. Typos are often a signal of spam-style messages, especially when sent from overseas.
