At the scene, police found front door damage and broken display cases. Inside, cash registers were stolen, as well as store merchandise.

The owner of the cannabis store reported that there was $14,000 in property damage and $3,200 in stolen store merchandise.

“Store surveillance footage revealed there were four suspects who were responsible for the incident. Officers on scene determined that the four suspects had arrived at the store in a stolen SUV from the City of Syracuse,” said DeWitt Police.

After the burglary, the stolen vehicle was found abandoned in the City of Syracuse, according to police.

A day later on May 31, DeWitt Police officers were at Kia of East Syracuse — doing a property check — when they saw four people getting out of a car in the parking lot. According to police, due to the recent thefts of Kia’s at this location, they contacted the subjects and conducted a traffic stop on an Uber driver who had dropped them off.

“Due to multiple inconsistencies in statements made by all parties and officers locating potential proceeds from the early burglary, the four juveniles were interviewed by police with their parent’s permission and were later released pending further investigation,” said DeWitt Police.

After a follow-up investigation, police concluded that two of the subjects who were stopped at Kia of East Syracuse were responsible for the burglary at the cannabis shop the day before.

So on June 4, DeWitt Police arrested two juveniles a 16-year-old male and a 17-year-old man. Both were charged with:

  • Burglary in the 3rd Degree, Criminal
  • Mischief in the 4th Degree, Grand Larceny in the 3rd Degree, and Criminal Possession of stolen
  • Property in the 3rd Degree

Neither were able to be arraigned at the time of their arrest, so they were given appearance tickets for the following day, June 5.
