New leader takes command of 10th Mountain Divison

FORT DRUM, N.Y. (WWTI) — New leadership is steering the 10th Mountain Division.
On May 31, the Division held its change of command ceremony for its commanding general. Outgoing 10th Mountain Division Commanding Major General (P) General Gregory Anderson relinquished command to Major General Scott Naumann.
The passing of the 10th Mountain Division colors marked the official change of command.
XVIII Airborne Corps Commanding General Lieutenant General Christopher Donahue hosted the ceremony.
“Scott [has] an incredible combat record,” LTG Donahue said during his remarks. “When you look at the right people to match everything that we have to do. This is the family. So Scott, unbelievable what you are going to do.”
MG Naumann arrived at Fort Drum after serving as the Deputy Chief of Stadd for Operations, Plans and Training at the U.S. Army Forces Command, Fort Liberty, North Carolina. The Commander has led soldiers at levels in airborne, ranger, light infantry, striker and mechanized formations.
He has been deployed 11 times in support of operations in Kuwait, Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. Naumann was previously stationed at Fort Drum. He commanded the 1st Brigade Combat Team and served as division chief of staff between 2015 and 2018.
He expressed that he plans to utilize this experience as he takes command of the most deployed division in the army.
“You can expect me to prioritize the preparation of our people to be ready today and relevant tomorrow while we continue to enrich the proud heritage and the unique identity of this division,” MG Naumann told the crowd and fellow soldiers during the change of command.
The ceremony also marked a bittersweet farewell to outgoing Division Commander Major General (P) Gregory Anderson.
“For those of you who may not understand how much can be done by one unit is simple. There’s only one way to do it. Invest in your people, trust them, give them intent in a problem, solve and then think long term and let them be patient as they go through them. They’ll summit any mountain you put in front of them,” Anderson expressed to the crowd.
Throughout his two-year campaign, he led a historic deployment to Eastern Europe in support of NATO allies. The Division also became the center of modern counter-UAS and electromagnetic spectrum warfare.
Major General Anderson’s overall focus during his leadership was returning 10th Mountain to its Alpine roots.
“Greg, all we’ve done is ask you to build on the legacy of this great division. And whenever you look in the annuals. Of what has occurred for this division over the last two years, this will. Go down as one of the most significant times in the history of this division,” LTG Donahue noted.
However, in closing, Anderson said that he believes the 10th Mountain Division’s newest commander will help the unit continue its climb upward.
“This is your mountain. Keep serving and growing and learning and winning. Don’t stop. Ever. And we will all meet at the top,” the Commander stated.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Llyod Austin has nominated Major General (P) Anderson to be promoted to Lieutenant General. Anderson is slated to take command of the XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Liberty, North Carolina.
