Intense nighttime fire in Syracuse leaves two firefighters injured

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Just before 11 p.m., on Tuesday, April 9, Syracuse Firefighters were sent to a structure fire at 610 Oneida Street.

Crews found a two-and-a-half-story building at the scene, with multiple doors boarded up.

The home appeared to be vacant.

Syracuse Fire sent out a signal “99” requesting help from more units.

“Firefighters gained entry and crews stretched hoses into the structure. Other teams of firefighters started methodical searches of the building, looking for any trapped occupants,” said the Syracuse Fire Department.

Syracuse Fire crews claim that there was a lot of smoke and fire inside the home and an intense heat.

Live power lines that had burned off the building and were lying in the front yard made things trickier for crews.

“Due to downed power lines, National Grid had to cut power to the entire 600 block of Oneida Street to make the scene safe for crews working,” said Syracuse Fire.

There were fires on the first floor, second floor, and the attic.

Crews couldn’t get to the attic due to damage to the stairs, so they used hoses from outside to put the fire out.

The home — which was determined by SFD to be vacant — suffered from fire, smoke, and water damage on the first and second floors and the attic

Two firefighters were injured as a result of the fire. One had an arm injury and went back to working on the fire after being checked out. As for the second, he burnt his leg. That firefighter was looked at, and taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.

Both are in stable condition. There was no injury to any others.

A total of 40 Fire Department personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, and National Grid also responded to the scene.
