Syracuse Fire Department ambulance crashes, five taken to hospital


SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Five people were taken to a local hospital after a Syracuse Fire Department ambulance crashed with an SUV at West Onondaga Street around 12:25 p.m. on Friday, April 5.
The ambulance was dispatched for a medical call at 12:12 p.m. at the 1700 block of West Onondaga St. after crews began to treat a pediatric patient and then headed to the hospital in the ambulance.
The ambulance then collided with an SUV at the intersection of West Onondaga St. and Slocum Avenue.
Firefighters in a firetruck following the ambulance then radioed for help, SFD said. Bystanders rushed to help the patient and people involved in the crash.
Additional fire crews later arrived, along with several ambulances from AMR. The patient was taken into an AMR Ambulance and driven to the hospital.
Four Syracuse firefighters in the ambulance were taken to a local hospital. Their injuries are not life-threatening, and they are in stable condition, SFD said.
The driver, and sole occupant of the SUV, was treated at the scene and released.
The ambulance suffered heavy front-end damage, according to SFD.
Syracuse police are now investigating the crash.
