NewsChannel 9 does not usually cover suicides, but are reporting on this incident due to the injury of a New York State Trooper, and the Attorney General’s involvement.
SOLVAY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Around 4 a.m. a 27-year-old Solvay woman called 911 to report that she was suicidal.
Jack Keller, a Public Information Officer for the New York State Police referred to the situation as a “mental health crisis.”
A friend of the 27-year-old was able to track her location, which led police to her around 4:20 a.m., in Baldwinsville. The Baldwinsville officer then followed the woman until other officers arrived for help.
Police say the woman was alone in the car.
Geddes, Solvay, and State Police arrived to assist and attempted to stop the driver. She didn’t take them on a chase, but refused to pull over.
Keller says that police and the victim ended up between Salisbury Road and Montrose Avenue, in Solvay, when “the car stops, a sudden jerk happens, and as officers walk up to the car they hear a large gunshot.”
When they made it to the car, they found the woman with a gunshot wound.
Police attempted to get into the car to aid the victim. Keller saying that one trooper punched through the window, and cut himself severely.
Troopers eventually got into the vehicle, and the 27-year-old was taken to Upstate Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The trooper who was injured was also taken to the hospital to be treated.
Keller says that in situations when there is a death and a law enforcement officer is involved, the Attorney General’s Office will also be part of the investigation.
No officers fired any weapons during the situation.
