Oneida County woman pleads guilty to wire fraud

Embezzled almost $2 million from Sauquoit contracting firm
ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — A Oneida County woman pled guilty to multiple federal wire fraud charges on Thursday, March 7.
56-year-old Carol Evans of Sauquoit was in court to plead guilty to the charges of embezzling almost $2 million when she was an employee at Sullivan Contracting in Sauquoit.
As part of her guilty plea, Evans admitted that during her time at the company, she doctored invoices from vendors to reflect inflated charges. The company would then issue checks for the doctored amount and gave the checks to Evans to pay the invoices. Evans would then deposit the checks into her own bank account.
Evans admitted that she would then pay the vendors the amount from the unaltered invoices or kept the entire payment for herself. Altogether, Evans admitted to approximately $1.8 million deposited into her own bank account.
Evans is scheduled to appear before United States District Judge David Hurd on Wednesday, June 26. She faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000 and a term of supervised release of three years.
The FBI is continuing to investigate the case.
