Canastota police officer arrested on drug and domestic charges

CANASTOTA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Canastota Village Police Officer Robert McCormick was arrested by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office last month on domestic charges and a drug possession charge.

On Jan. 29, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office was called to a domestic dispute involving the 59-year-old. The victim reported being in a relationship with McCormick and said he was stalking her following a breakup attempt.

The victim said McCormick had sent her hundreds of unwanted messages, repeatedly called her and continually drove by her residence.

She also showed messages showing that McCormick used his position as a police officer to intimidate her during domestic disputes, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said.

While being arrested on domestic charges on Feb. 9, McCormick was found with cocaine, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.

McCormick is charged with:

  • Official Misconduct – Class A Misdemeanor
  • Aggravated Harassment in the 2nd degree – Class A Misdemeanor
  • Stalking in the 4th degree – Class B Misdemeanor
  • Harassment in the 2nd degree – Violation
  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th degree – Class A Misdemeanor

He was arraigned in the Town of Lenox Court and released on his own recognizance.

McCormick has been placed on administrative leave pending the resolution of his charges, the Canastota Village Police Department said. He was most recently a School Resource Officer at Canastota High School.
