Making More Room for Micron with a trip across the globe

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – Build it, and they will come. That’s been the promise. As if Micron isn’t enough, the Onondaga County Executive and others have been saying supply chain companies will also want to move to Central New York to feed the MegaFab.

“We’re globally relevant in this space, and for us to meet this moment in front of us, we need to make sure these supply chain partners, if they’re coming to the United States, that they come here,” County Executive Ryan McMahon said.

The Micron project is generating so much interest, across the country and around the world that McMahon says they’ve been asked by officials in Taiwan to visit their country and meet with supply chain companies about moving to Central New York.

“Micron makes key investments in Taiwan, so naturally, when we’re talking about trying to build and create an ecosystem, one of the things that we need to execute on is making sure Micron has all their supply chain partners co-locating with them in CNY, and it’s competitive,” McMahon said.

While McMahon and his group will be promoting and selling the benefits of setting up in the Syracuse area and Central New York, they can also learn from their hosts.

“If you want people to come and invest in your community sometimes you need to go knock on their door. We are not cold calling by any means, but certainly, I think it makes sense for us to learn how Taiwan has created this ecosystem there from the standpoint of educational workforce development, but also the community,” McMahon explained.

A model McMahon says they plan on replicating right here.
