#3 Orange Defeat #4 Seawolves to Remain Unbeaten

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 3 Syracuse remained unbeaten with a 12-11 victory against No. 4 Stony Brook on Sunday, Feb. 20 in the Carrier Dome. Senior Megan Carney led the way with seven points on three goals and four assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither team could pull away in the first half as Syracuse (3-0) led by one at halftime, 6-5. With the Orange leading 8-6, three straight goals by Stony Brook (0-1) gave the Seawolves their first lead since the first quarter at 9-8. Syracuse responded with a 4-0 scoring run to take a 12-9 advantage into the fourth quarter. Carney sparked the run with an unassisted goal before assisting on freshman Olivia Adamson’s goal at the 5:47 mark. Meaghan Tyrrell added an unassisted goal and Emma Tyrrell connected with Adamson, who found the back of the net with 23 seconds on the clock, giving the Orange their second goal in the final minute of a quarter in the contest.

Stony Brook fought back and cut the deficit to 12-11, setting up a chaotic final five minutes that featured three yellow cards and a Syracuse goal wiped off because of an illegal stick. The Seawolves had possession with a chance to even the score, but Natalie Smith caused a turnover and Tessa Queri picked up the ground ball with a minute remaining to secure the Orange’s second victory against a ranked opponent this season.

OF NOTE
Carney, Meaghan Tyrrell and Emily Hawryschuk combined for nine of Syracuse’s 12 goals. Tyrrell scored a team-high four goals, increasing her season total to 15. She leads the team in points (19) and goals. Hawryschuk saw her first action in the draw circle in the victory. She recorded two draw controls as teams were even in that category (13-13).

Smith made her first career start and posted career highs with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. The Orange won the ground ball battle, 26-14.
