Orange Ready for Top 5 Matchup in the Dome

No. 3 Syracuse will host No. 4 Stony Brook at 4 p.m. in the Carrier Dome this Sunday. The highly anticipated matchup is part of Lacrosse Legends Day, featuring Roy Simmons Jr. ’59’s induction into the Orange’s Ring of Honor and Katie Rowan ’09 and Gary Gait ’90’s jersey retirement ceremonies.

The Orange men’s team opens the day with an 11 a.m. match up against No. 1 Maryland. Tickets for the doubleheader can be purchased at Cuse.com/tickets for $15 in advance.

This is the second straight top-five meeting between Syracuse and Stony Brook. In 2021, No. 2 Syracuse defeated No. 5 Stony Brook, 16-6, in the Dome. The victory avenged the Orange’s 17-16 season-opening loss to the Seawolves in 2020.

Sunday’s game starts a tough stretch for the Orange. After beginning the year with three straight home games, Syracuse plays five of its next seven on the road. The stretch starts with a road trip to No. 12 Notre Dame and No. 5 Northwestern.

Syracuse is 2-0 this season after putting away No. 13 Stanford and dispatching Binghamton, 23-6. Senior Meaghan Tyrrell has gotten off to a hot start in 2022, notching 11 goals and earning national player of the week honors from USA Lacrosse Magazine. Sunday will be Stony Brook’s first game of the year. The Seawolves look to build off a season which saw them post a 16-3 record, win the America East Championship, and come within a game of reaching Championship Weekend.

Before Sunday’s contest, Syracuse women’s lacrosse legend Katie Rowan‘s jersey will be retired. Rowan is the program’s all-time leading scorer with 396 points. In 2008, she set the single-season mark for points (142) and assists (69) while leading the Orange to their first Championship Weekend.

Additionally, Simmons Jr. will become the sixth member of the Ring of Honor, joining Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, Jim Boeheim, and Dwayne “Pearl” Washington.  Gait, who currently serves as head coach of the men’s team, will see his jersey retired. Gait was a four-time All-American midfielder and three-time nation champion with the Orange from 1987-90. He guided the women’s program from 2008-21, leading the Orange to eight Final Fours and two national championship game appearances.
