Orange Pick Up First ACC Road Win
Naje Murray led the Orange (10-12, 3-9 ACC) with a season-high 24 points in the 77-70 victory over Virginia (3-18, 0-11 ACC) on Tuesday night. Murray added two rebounds, an assist, and four steals. She shot 8-for-11 from the field and 5-for-7 from three-point range.
Chrislyn Carr followed up Murray with 14 points, three rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal. Carr shot a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. This was the second time this season that an Orange player made 10 free throws in a game. Teisha Hyman also made 10 at the charity stripe against #17 Duke.
The Orange scored the first points of the game off a Naje Murray three-pointer. Virginia answered just 22 seconds later with a three ball from Amandine Toi at 8:12. Syracuse followed with an 8-2 run to take the lead 11-5 at the media timeout. The Orange outscored the Cavaliers 11-7 to win the first quarter, 22-12.
Syracuse opened the second quarter with back-to-back layups from Alaysia Styles and Alaina Rice before Virginia found the basket. ‘Cuse held a 13-point lead over the Cavs at the media timeout, 30-17. Virginia came out of the pause on a 7-0 run to bring the game within six, but the Orange held on to the lead through halftime, 35-26.
Syracuse dominated the opening of the third, allowing just three points in the first 3:50 of play while stretching their lead to 19. The Cavaliers went on a 6-2 run after the dry shooting period to cut the lead to 15 at the media timeout. Both teams went cold for the rest of the quarter, scoring a combined seven points. Syracuse led at the end of the third, 52-40.
Christianna Carr scored the first basket of the fourth quarter just 16 seconds into the period, but an 8-2 Virginia run followed to shorten the lead to eight, 56-48. Syracuse closed out the game on a 17-11 run. Chrislyn Carr was hot from the free throw line, drilling eight straight free throws, four of which came after a Virginia technical foul with 1:44 remaining. Virginia cut the lead back down to nine with five points in six seconds, but the Orange could not miss from the line, making another four-of-four free throws. A post-game technical with no time left on the clock sent Virginia to the line for two more free throws before the score went final in favor of Syracuse with a seven-point road win.
Acting head coach Vonn Read used six players in the Orange win. All six scored, and four of the six scored in double figures. Teisha Hyman added 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
Christianna Carr had 10 points, four rebounds, and an assist. Styles and Rice each had eight points. Styles had four boards, two assists, and three steals while Rice had eight rebounds and two steals.
The Orange remain on the road to face off against Pittsburgh on Sunday, Feb. 13 at the Petersen Events Center at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ACCN.
