'Cuse Returns to the Win Column
Christianna Carr led the Orange to an 80-72 win over Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon. Carr scored 19 points, had five rebounds, four assists and two steals. With the win, Syracuse snapped a six-game losing streak and earned its 21st straight win against the Panthers, a streak that dates back to February, 2, 2010. The win also improves Syracuse to 9-10 overall and 2-7 at home this season.
Chrislyn Carr added 17 points, five rebounds, two steals and a team-high eight assists. Her eight assists were a season-high.
The Panthers scored the first points of the game off a Maliyah Johnson layup. Pittsburgh jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but the Orange responded with a 16-10 run leading up to the media timeout, highlighted by Alaysia Styles back-to-back threes. The Orange trailed at the end of the first, 25-20.
Syracuse opened the second quarter with an 8-2 run, before Styles took a hard charge. Pittsburgh added four points to take the lead at the media timeout to 31-28. Chrislyn Carr hit a three right out of the media timeout to tie the game at 31. This sparked an 8-0 run for the Orange before the Panthers scored again. The Orange led at halftime, 44-39. ‘Cuse drew four charges before the half and shot 38.1. percent from the field and 38.9 percent from three.
Both teams came out battling in the third, but a quick turnover-turned-layup forced a Pittsburgh timeout as Syracuse stretched its lead to 53-46. The Orange built the lead. To 10 at the media timeout, with the score 58-48. Pitt ended the quarter on an 8-0 run to bring the game within five. The Orange maintained the lead 63-58.
Syracuse opened the fourth quarter on a 5-3 run before Pittsburgh used their second timeout of the half. Syracuse used its first timeout of the game after a close stretch that brought the score to 73-66. The Orange built on the lead from the timeout and closed out the game with an eight-point win.
Coach Read used seven players in the Orange win. Six scored, and five of the seven scored in double figures. Alaysia Styles had 16 points, six rebounds, and two assists, two steals, and a block.
Naje Murray notched 14 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block. Teisha Hyman had 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Alaina Rice hit a three-ball and added a rebound and a steal.
The Orange went 31-for-77 from the field, good for 40.3 percent, and 13-for-32 from three, good for 40.6 percent. The Orange forced 23 turnovers, including 12 steals.
The Orange hit the road to battle Miami on Thursday, Feb. 3 in Coral Gables at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on ACCNX through the ESPN app.
