Cortaca Jug game thrills thousands at Ithaca College

ITHACA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV)–Ithaca College hosted the Cortaca Jug game against SUNY Cortland today, attracting thousands of fans to witness one of college football’s most storied Division III rivalries.
The Cortaca Jug, known as the biggest little game in the nation, brought an electric atmosphere to Ithaca College as fans from both schools packed the stands. The energy was high long before kickoff, with supporters from both sides chanting for their teams.
“It’s just like the biggest day of bomber spirit on campus by far,” said one Ithaca fan, highlighting the significance of the event for the college community.
Cortland fans were equally enthusiastic, with one supporter expressing excitement for the big game and the rivalry’s intensity.
Alumni from both schools returned to watch the game, using the occasion to reconnect with former teammates and friends. “It’s good to be back to see everyone,” said one alumnus, reflecting on the camaraderie and shared experiences.
For many former players, attending the game as spectators was a surreal experience. “Yeah first came back, not as a player, hit a little different for sure,” said former player Michael Luppino. “The feeling when you’re on the field is like no other, but this is a pretty close second”, noted former player Danny Portas.
The rivalry’s intensity has been a staple for decades, with players and fans alike acknowledging the unique atmosphere. “You can try and tell them as much as you can about how it’s gonna feel like out there, how different it is, and now it’s not a regular Saturday, but you don’t know until you’re in it,” said Michael Toerper, Head coach of Ithaca football, capturing the essence of the Cortaca Jug experience.
In the end, it was Ithaca who emerged victorious, defeating SUNY Cortland 26–21 in a thrilling contest that upheld the tradition of the Cortaca Jug as one of the most electric events in college sports.
