Executive Turntable: Hannah Carlen Succeeds Dan Cohen as Nonesuch Marketing Chief, Plus 1916 Partners Up
Nonesuch Records has named indie music veteran Hannah Carlen as vice president of marketing and communications, succeeding Dan Cohen, who led the department since 2018. Based in New York and reporting to label president David Bither, Carlen will oversee marketing, sales, publicity, new media and content creation for the Warner Music Group label.
Carlen brings extensive experience from her tenure at Secretly Group and All Flowers Group, where she served as senior director of marketing and communications. She helped shape campaigns for acclaimed Secretly acts such as Bon Iver, Phoebe Bridgers, Japanese Breakfast, Khruangbin, Mitski and Faye Webster. Beginning her career in Portland, Ore., Carlen worked in radio promotion for noncommercial and Triple A formats, supporting artists like Daft Punk, PJ Harvey, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings and Portishead.
Joining Secretly Group in 2011 as radio director, she led successful campaigns for The War on Drugs, Angel Olsen, Phosphorescent, Unknown Mortal Orchestra,and Sharon Van Etten, as well as distribution releases by Sufjan Stevens and Mac DeMarco. In 2017, Carlen became Secretly’s first U.S. marketing director, expanding the department and driving strategic growth for eight years. In 2024, she also joined All Flowers Group’s marketing leadership, working on projects for Ginger Root, Dua Saleh, THEY., Annahstasia and Yaya Bey.

Dan made significant contributions to Nonesuch over nearly a decade with us and we are now fortunate to have someone of Hannah’s expertise and judgment to take over this critical role,” said Bither. “I am grateful that Nonesuch will benefit from the rich experience she brings us.”
Carlen expressed deep admiration for Nonesuch’s legacy and artist-first approach, calling the label “one of the best and most essential record labels of all time.” She added, “Equally special is the home that Nonesuch makes for artists, the ways this team supports their work, and the patience and care Nonesuch brings to artist development.
