Alan Cumming to Return as Host of 2026 Movies for Grownups Awards: Here’s the Date

Alan Cumming will again host the Movies for Grownups Awards with AARP, which will be held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Jan. 10. The awards show, which originated in 2001, honors the most compelling film and television of the previous year that was created for the 50-plus audience.

This is Cumming’s fifth time as host. Cumming has won four Primetime Emmys in the past two years as both host and producer of The Traitors. Cumming is also a two-time Tony winner. He won best actor in a musical for Cabaret (1998) and was among a platoon of producers on A Strange Loop, which was named best musical in 2022.

Nominees will be announced soon. Last year, there were 11 film categories and three for television.

Of the first 24 films to win Best Movie for Grownups, four went on to win the Oscar for best picture — The King’s Speech, 12 Years a Slave, Spotlight and Green Book. Most others were at least nominated for the best picture Oscar, but nine of the AARP winners weren’t even nominated in that category at the Oscars. Those films are Lantana, About Schmidt, The Last King of Scotland, The Savages, Invictus, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Loving, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

The evening’s pinnacle honor, the Career Achievement Award, will be presented to “a legendary artist whose work has made a lasting impact on the industry.” The 2026 ceremony will no doubt acknowledge actor and director Robert Redford, who received the award in 2011.
