The 2025 Emmy Awards

By Jack Nevins

The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards brought the biggest names in television to the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 14th. Comedian Nate Bargatze hosted the event, which was aired on CBS. For the past few years, the ratings of the Emmys have been down. However, this year the broadcast drew in 7.42 million views, which is an 8% increase from last year. This established this year’s show as the largest Emmys audience since 2021.

Beginning with the comedy category, the series, The Studio, made its mark. The series won Best Comedy Series, as well as collecting a total of 13 awards across both Primetime and Creative Arts ceremonies. This marked itself as one of the most decorated comedies in Emmys history.

The drama category presented the freshman medical series The Pitt, which pulled off a surprise win for the most Outstanding Drama Series. This win beat many fan favorites like Severance. Aside from being a big moment for the entire series, it was also a monumental moment for one of the show’s actors, Noah Wyle, who earned his first Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

One of the most notable winning shows of the night was Adolescence, the limited series that saw accomplishment like no other. Aside from winning the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, the series also took home awards in the Outstanding Lead Actor, Outstanding Supporting Actor, Outstanding Supporting Actress, Outstanding Directing, and Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. These wins made Emmy Awards’ history, as 15-year-old Owen Cooper became the youngest male actor ever to win Supporting Actor in a Limited Series.

The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards reflected the shifting landscape of television. Streaming platforms like Netflix, Apple TV+, and HBO prevailed, highlighting how awards shows are constantly evolving and improving. Wins for shows like The Studio, The Pitt, and Adolescence will bring a new popularity to these series, displaying that the Emmys are more than just an award show, but an event of engagement and interaction. With the ratings increased from last year, this year’s show proved that this award show will remain one of the biggest nights in television.
