CSX: Route 31 reopened late Monday


Update 7:20 p.m. 9-8-25: Work included repairing the existing track, as well as cutting the black top back, removing damaged concrete, replacing it with flangway rubber, resurfacing it and paving.
The crossing is now open.
Update 1:40 p.m. Monday 9-8-2025 – In an email from CSX the crossing was paved this morning and is scheduled to reopen at 4 p.m. Monday 9-8-2025.
Update as of 7:00 a.m. Sept. 8: Heads up if you take Route 31 to work and school in Clay. All lanes remain closed at the CSX railroad crossing near Texas Roadhouse and COR Center. The road was supposed to reopen by 11:30 p.m., Sunday, according to a news release by the New York State Department of Transportation. We’ve reached out to the NYSDOT to see when the road might reopen. For now, the official detour has people using Soule Road to get around.
Update as of 2:00 p.m. Sept. 6: Viewers are calling News Channel 9 and saying that people are swearing, driving incorrectly, and jamming up traffic because a road is closed near this railroad track. Viewers said that people ‘aren’t following traffic laws’ and ‘driving however they want.’
One woman said she saw an ambulance that was on its way to a call had to turn around becasue of the closure.
The road closure is also said to be causing hour-long detours that should only take 10 minutes.
Concerned drivers say there should be a trooper present.

We have an update to a popular complaint to the Your Stories Team!
Several of our viewers have reached out to us about a bumpy track on Route 31, near Texas Roadhouse in Clay.
After bringing your complaints to CSX, we’re told the track is getting repaired this weekend.
Route 31 will be closed at the crossing from 10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, to 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7.
This is a heavily traveled area because the crossing sits near the COR Center Shopping Plaza.
Recommended Detour
The NYSDOT said signed detours will be in place. Those driving westbound, are encouraged to use Soule Road, to Route 57, to Route 31.
Those driving eastbound, are encouraged to use Route 57, to Soule Road, to Route 31.
The work could be delayed due to weather.
We have had success in recent years getting several bumpy crossings fixed in Central New York, including the notorious Route 290 (Manlius Center Road) in DeWitt and the tracks near Crouse-Hinds in Syracuse/Salina.
CSX said it’s also about to tackle a rough crossing in Parish that we’ve reported on for more than a year.
