Two Auburn residents indicted in animal abuse case


AUBURN, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Two people were indicted on animal abuse charges related to the mistreatment of their dogs.
District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci announced on Friday, August 29, that 45-year-old Kenneth Sulgar and 50-year-old Laura Hendrickson, both residents of Auburn, were indicted by a Cayuga County Grand Jury on one count of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals, a Class E Felony; two counts of Overdriving, Torturing and Injuring Animals, Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance, Class A Misdemeanors; two counts of Abandonment of Animals, a Misdemeanor; and one count of Failure to Provide Proper Food and Drink to an Impounded Animal, a Misdemeanor.
Allegedly, between November 2023 and March 2025, Sulgar and Hendrickson deprived their dog of necessary food, causing her to become severely underweight; confined the dog in a crate causing her to sustain severe pododermatitis, or inflammation of the paws, and permanent disfigurement of her paws; and abandoned two dogs.
Sulgar and Hendrickson face a maximum sentence of two years in jail if convicted after trial.
“The Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office has made it a priority to expedite the
prosecution of animal abuse offenders in our County. Our Office, along with our law
enforcement partners, will continue our unwavering commitment to holding these individuals
accountable for their actions and seeking swift prosecution of these offenders,” the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
