Run-DMC’s ‘It’s Like That’ Reimagined By LEGO & Global Girls Crew as Women Empowerment Anthem
Run-DMC’s “It’s Like That” has been reimagined into a girl power anthem thanks to LEGO Group and Global Girls Crew. With shows like Bob the Builder and gender norms typically aligning males with construction, “She Built That” looks to challenge the status quo and show that girls can do it too.
“Run-DMC has always stood for breaking barriers and inspiring change,” Rev Run and DMC said in a joint statement. “We’re excited to see our classic anthem reimagined as ‘She Built That,’ celebrating the creativity and innovation of girls everywhere. Just as we pushed the limits of hip-hop, we want to inspire a world where every girl recognizes her building power.”
The Snoop Dogg-approved DJ Livia, 15-year-old British drummer Nandi Bushell, Dutch-Surinamese singer Pink Oculus and Chinese alt-pop artist Cacie teamed up to form the ultimate girl group for “She Built That,” which flips Run-DMC’s 1983 debut single.
“She Built That” hits streaming services on Wednesday (June 4) and the accompanying visual finds Run-DMC in their signature black adidas tracksuits in LEGO form before the scene switches to the Global Girls Crew running the game.
“There was a time my family was homeless in Chicago,” DJ Livia said. “What kept us going was refusing to give up. That’s what building is to me — and what ‘She Built That’ stands for. It’s about rising up and creating something out of nothing.”
The LEGO Group launched a game alongside “She Built That” where players will be able to take a mini-doll avatar and create their own version of the music video. There’s plenty more to come from the “She Built That” campaign later this year as well.
