Onondaga County July 4th fireworks: What’s legal, what’s not

EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y (WSYR-TV)— With the Fourth of July just days away, fireworks tents are back across Central New York, and so are the reminders to celebrate safely! At TNT’s Firework stand on Basil Rowe, safety isn’t just a footnote; according to manager Lateef Broone, it’s a part of every sale.

“As long as you’re with an adult, someone over I would say…you know, if you are with your legal guardian, whoever’s got parental supervision, make sure that you’ve got some type of fire extinguisher,” said the TNT East Syracuse Manager.

He and his team walk customers through what’s allowed in Onondaga County to handle fireworks responsibly, and importantly, what not to do. That includes never lighting a firework in your hand, never pointing them at people, and always reading the label first.

At TNT, it’s most common for buyers to be so excited that they rip open the fireworks and toss the packaging aside. But the label highlights the safety, but reading “Don’t hold in hand. Light the use and get away.”

WHAT’S LEGAL IN NEW YORK STATE?

Allowed (in certain counties, including Onondaga):

  • Sparklers
  • Ground-based fountains
  • Snakes, smoke bombs, and handheld novelties
  • Spinning devices that stay on the ground

NOT Allowed (Statewide Ban):

  • Firecrackers
  • Bottle rockets
  • Roman candles
  • Aerial repeaters or “cakes”
  • Anything that explodes or launches into the air

Note: Each county in New York can opt in or out of allowing sparkling devices. Onondaga County currently allows them during limited periods around July 4th and New Year’s.
