Lizzo Talks Body Neutrality, Trolling Haters & Taking Pride in Her WikiFeet Score on ‘Ziwe’
From her head to her toes, Lizzo loves her body — something the hitmaker opened up about from multiple angles during her chaotic Ziwe interview posted Thursday (May 8).
Noting that she was particularly hyper that day due to all the coffee she’d drank prior to the conversation, Lizzo did not hold back. The topic of body image first came up when the famously sardonic web series host asked her guest whether “body positivity just a marketing device to sell music and panties,” to which the Yitty founder replied seriously, “Damn. It is now.”
“But I wasn’t selling music [at the beginning], I was selling myself,” she continued. “I just also happened to be extremely, extremely body positive. And I still am. Can’t change me.”
In addition to being body positive, however, Lizzo said that she’s “also body neutral,” going on to explain the difference between the two concepts. “I’m body positive,” she said of her personal outlook. “Body neutral is for y’all. Y’all need to be body neutral about my body.”
Throughout her career, Lizzo has built her platform on encouraging self-love through her music and messaging, from her breakout in 2019 with “Truth Hurts” to her 2022 Billboard Hot 100-topper “About Damn Time.” That said, even she had trouble when Ziwe Fumudoh challenged her to say something positive about the body of 83-year-old Republican Senator Mitch McConnell — but the left-leaning Grammy winner still managed to pull out something resembling a compliment.
“You talking about that bruised b—h that fell?” she began of the politician before attempting to say something nice. “You know what, I hate to say this, but sometimes, he looks like Franklin Turtle. He’s at his best when he’s really confused. In that small moment, he looks like someone’s grandpa. And I’m like, ‘That’s somebody’s granddaddy, bro.’ And it’s considered cute.”
As for one of her favorite features of her own body, Lizzo revealed that she’s particularly fond of her WikiFeet-rated toes — even though one of her toenails fell off recently. “I have precious little piggies,” she said proudly. “I knew that I had a celebrity foot rating, and that it was quite high, and then my toenail fell off. And I was not able to wear open toe shoes for a year. It was like a turtle shell. There was another toenail growing underneath.”
“Close-toed shoes at the f–king Met Gala,” she added of the injury. “It was disgusting.”
The interview comes as the singer is launching her latest musical era, with new album Love in Real Life set to drop this year. Ahead of the LP, Lizzo has already dropped its title track and follow-up single “Still Bad.”
Her conversation with Ziwe also comes as Lizzo has been making headlines for her recent weight loss, which the musician has documented online. When asked if she takes pleasure in shutting down body-shaming haters who’ve tried to discourage her throughout the process, Lizzo was honest.
“You know what I love doing? I love making people feel dumb when they do dumb s–t,” she replied. “And I’m very good at it. I am a troll. I’m an O.G. troll, and I’m proud of it. I started this s–t, me, Lil Nas X, Azealia Banks. Put us on Mount Trollmore, b—h.”
