Town of Virgil streets now back open after propane leak

Update: As of 11 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office said all roads are back open.
TOWN OF VIRGIL, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Around 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, a 1,800-gallon truck tipped over, leaking propane on West River Road at the intersection of Snyder Hill Road, the Virgil Fire Chief Adam Brown told NewsChannel 9.
According to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office, West River Road, Stafford Road, and Snyder Hill are all closed at this time.
The City of Cortland Fire Department Hazmat Team is investigating to determine the size of the leak and the best way to handle it.
The NYSDEC is also involved.
Chief Brown explained that right now, they believe the best way to handle the spill is with a flare-off. This means, burning off the propane, which is an eight to ten-hour process.
A reverse 911 call has been made to nearby homes to shelter in place. Two nearby homes have been evacuated as a precaution, with possibly more to be evacuated.
There is no clear answer as to what caused the tip-over, but there are no injuries from this incident.
Please avoid the area while crews work to clean it up.
