Much colder air arriving in Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — After a relatively mild start to the weekend, much colder air is moving in to Central New York overnight and Sunday. There could also be some more snow as we close out the weekend. Details below…

Rain/snow showers taper

Quieter weather is expected overnight with a couple lingering flurries and light snow showers possible. Lows will be in the teens for most, which is seasonable for this time of year.

Colder on Sunday, but any snow?

Highs on Sunday will only be in the low to mid 20s at best. While there could be a few flurries around to start the day, especially west of Syracuse, there should be some dry time in the mix.

This could change late in the day, however, as we are tracking a storm moving up the East Coast. This could bring some snow to areas south and east of Syracuse late Sunday afternoon and evening.

Any accumulation looks to be minor, ranging from 1 to 3 inches southeast of Syracuse. Higher totals of 3 to 6 inches are likely southeast of Utica and Norwich into the Catskills.

When does arctic air return?

While Sunday features colder temperatures, the coldest air will hold off until Monday and especially Tuesday.

This air mass heading our way is coming from the other side of the North Pole in Siberia, so it will sting.

From Monday through Wednesday, Syracuse likely won’t be able to make it out of the teens. This would be our longest stretch this cold since the winter of 2019.

At times over this three-day period, the combination of frigid temperatures and gusty winds will lead to wind chills below zero.

It’s safe to say you should have your heaviest winter weather gear ready for next week and be prepared to limit your exposure outside along with any pets.

What about snow?

There are no major storms nearby while the core of the arctic air is here, but we do have to contend with some snow.

There should be another round of heavy lake effect snow north of Syracuse early next week. Given this will be the coldest air we’ve seen so far this winter, there is no reason to believe we won’t be measuring snowfall in FEET for some east of Lake Ontario between Monday and Wednesday.
