An Instant Classic, East Coast vs. West Coast: Welcome to the 2024 World Series

By Jack Nevins

The Stars are out from Broadway to Hollywood and a tradition that rekindles itself Friday night. The 2024 World Series welcomes the Los Angeles Dodgers from the National League, and the New York Yankees from the American League. Both are champion rich teams, and historic franchises. The Yankees are ending their 15 year drought of reaching the World Series, since their last appearance in 2009 and the Dodgers are looking for another championship in this decade, after their last win in 2020. This matchup will be a battle for ages with the games best on display.

The clubs will face each other for the first time in 43 years in the World Series, but despite that, this will be the 12th time these two teams will go head-to-head. In 1941, the Yankees, and the then Brooklyn Dodgers faced off in their first World Series meeting, where the Yankees took the series 4-1. LA got the best of New York in 1981, taking the boys from the Bronx down 4-2 in the series. The Yankees lead this historic World Series series 8-3, with a chance to make the margin bigger, or have the Dodger make the margin smaller.

The World Series is must see television for any sports fan, not only to see two of the winningest franchises face off against each, but to see two of the not only the greatest players in the MLB, but also two of the greatest athletes on the planet, Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani. The two sluggers are in the front of the race to win the MVP in both of their leagues. Ohtani won the MVP with the LA Angles in 2021 and 2023, while Judge won the award in 2022. Judge led the league with 58 homers, with Ohtani right behind him with 54 in the regular season. Not only is 54 home runs impressive, add on 59 stolen bases becoming the first member of the 50/50 club in the MLB. The Yankees captain respects Ohtani’s game to the fullest “He’s an impressive athlete, the best player in the game and what an ambassador for the sport”. Ohtani has changed the game of baseball and will bring a new era in the years to come.

Out of the seven players that have the best-selling jerseys in the MLB this season, four of them will be put on the world’s greatest stage. Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge, Mookie Betts, and Juan Soto are all the league’s most popular players. This does not even include Giancarlo Staton, Gerritt Cole, Freddie Freeman, and Jack Flaherty. Betts, Soto, Cole, and Freeman, have all been in this position before, getting at least one ring under their belt, and adding to their collection of hardware. The names we are all waiting to hear are Judge and Ohtani, who are here for the first time.

This year’s Fall Classic will truly be an all out brawl between two of the greatest franchises in MLB history. With the league’s best stars on their A-game, who will take it all. The world will sit back and watch one of the most entertaining matchups in sports history.
