It was a tornado that touched down in Rome

Update 8 p.m. Wednesday, 7-17-24: The NWS confirmed an EF-2 tornado touched down in Rome.

It touched down between the Erie Canal and Muck Road in Oneida County and passed directly through Rome before lifting up near Griffiss International Airport. It produced estimated maximum winds of 135 mph.

ROME, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Initial reports from the National Weather Service survey team say that it was indeed a tornado that caused the destruction in Rome on Tuesday afternoon, July 16, 2024.

The storm that dropped the tornado was a spinning storm that prompted a tornado warning Tuesday first in Cayuga County.

The storm then tracked across the northern half of Onondaga County, northern Madison, and Oneida counties. There was scattered damage all along the storm’s path, but it wasn’t until approximately 3:25 p.m. Tuesday, July 16 that a tornado dropped from the cloud and caused considerable damage in Rome, in Oneida County.
