Two people taken to hospital after Park Avenue fire in Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, June 19, Syracuse firefighters were called to a house fire at 923 Park Avenue.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, they saw large amounts of smoke coming from the basement.
Crews began to search the home for people possibly trapped inside and stretched hoses into the basement.
The search team found a semi-conscious person in the basement who was unable to escape. The person was taken out of the house to a waiting ambulance crew who took them to a local hospital.
They suffered serious smoke inhalation injuries, said SFD. Their condition is not known at this time.
A second person was also taken to the hospital for evaluation after escaping the house. Their injuries are not life-threatening, according to SFD.
A hose team was able to bring the fire in the basement under control. Firefighters then spent more than an hour chasing flames behind walls and in stud chases. A hole also had to be cut in the roof to help with smoke ventilation, SFD said.
The fire was officially declared out after roughly an hour and a half.
Six people were displaced by the fire, who have been assisted by the American Red Cross.
The basement of the home, where the fire began, suffered smoke, water and fire damage. The first and second floors also suffered smoke and water damage.
No firefighters were injured, according to SFD. Firefighters from around the city were rotated to assist the first responding crews, including some who had worked several hours at the Carbon Street house collapse.
