Two people rescued out of Oneida Lake, one dead

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — On Sunday, June 16, around just before 10 a.m., members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol were out on Oneida Lake, near the pier located close to the Waterfront Tavern in the Town of Hastings, when they came across two people in the water that were in distress.

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol was able to rescue one of the two individuals, identified as Wattie Cappers, 42 years of age.  Cappers was transported to Upstate Hospital and is in stable condition. 

Members of Brewerton Fire Department arrived on scene to assist and were able to locate the other individual in distress, Anthony Davis, 44 years of age, from Clay, NY.  The man was pulled from the water by a diver with the Brewerton Fire Department and was taken to Upstate Hospital where he was pronounced dead there.  

The investigation revealed that Cappers, Davis, and another male were fishing for Father’s Day when Davis’s keys fell in the water. 

Davis tried to get his keys but was unable to make it back to land.  Cappers jumped into rescue Davis but was also unable to make it back to land. 

Shortly after, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol arrived on scene after hearing the yelling for help.
