Tell Me Something Good: Marissa Mulder

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Jazz Fest impacted Marissa Mulder when she was just a kid.

We could sometimes hear it from my house on the west side of the city, so we would go once in a while. But I always knew it was happening, and that’s why when I was asked to be a part of last year’s, I was so honored. Because it’s such a big deal.

She’s excited to return for opening night, Wednesday night, at Prime Steakhouse. She was just five when her grandmother put her on stage to sing “Tomorrow” from “Annie.” And her Tomorrow’s keep getting better. The Syracuse native has been chasing her dreams in New York City since 2007, and she’s considered a rising star on the Manhattan cabaret scene.

Her specialty is weaving together words and music to create an evening of storytelling. Tributes to Tom Waits and Syracuse native Jimmy Van Heusen, even the legendary Marilyn Monroe.

And it seems that desire runs through her family. Her brother Kevin was on Bridge Street in November when he appeared in a cabaret line-up with Front Row Players, a theatre program open to adults of all abilities.

He’s always loved to sing, since he was a little boy. He loves the theatre, film, music, so it’s been such a gift.
