Teenager dies after drowning in the Erie Canal in Newark


ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The body of a 17-year-old boy was pulled from the waters of the Erie Canal Monday night in Newark.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office responded to Main Street and Van Buren Street for a water rescue. Deputies said they received the report of a teenager who jumped in and didn’t resurface.
Investigators said a passerby jumped into the canal to save him, but was unable to. Newark firefighters were able to find the body of the victim and pulled him out.
Deputies said nothing suspicious was found at the time, but the investigation is ongoing.
