Rome man arrested after attempting to steal copper piping

Attempted to steal piping from Staley Elementary

ROME, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — A Rome man was arrested on Thursday, June 6 after attempting to steal copper piping from an elementary school, according to Rome Police.

Officers were called to the Staley Upper Elementary School on East Bloomfield Street at approximately 1:30 pm. Upon their arrival they located the suspect — later identified as 41-year-old Santos Cruz of Rome — near a large pile of copper piping inside the building.

Cruz allegedly attempted to flee officers by re-entering the building, but was unable to enter the building. Police say he then attempted to flee the area, but was ultimately arrested by Rome Police.

Cruz was processed at the Rome Police Department. He was eventually transported to the Oneida County Jail for arraignment.

Cruz is currently being charged with:

  • third-degree Burglary, a Class D Felony, and
  • Resisting arrest, a Class A Misdemeanor.
