NYSP investigate a three-car collision leaving two children injured in Jefferson County

ELLISBURG, N.Y. (WWTI) – New York State Police are investigating a three-car crash that injured two children Monday in Jefferson County.

Around 2:45 p.m. on Monday, State Police Watertown responded to a reported personal injury accident at the intersection of State Route 3 and State Route 193 in the town of Ellisburg. 

A initial investigation revealed that a 2020 Nissan being driven by 30-year-old Joseph Muniz-Colon of Syracuse, was stopped at the intersection facing west on State Route 193 and attempted to cross the intersection of State route 3 in a westerly direction. He failed to observe a 2018 Ford traveling north on State Route 3 driven by 56-year-old Dean Wheeler from Mannsville resulting in a T-bone collision. A 2022 Toyota driven by 59-year-old Cindy Rainbow-Altman of Baldwinsville, was struck by the 2018 Ford as a result from the initial collision.

A one-year old and a six-year-old passenger in the 2020 Nissan were transported to University Hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. The one-year-old was taken via ambulance while the six-year-old was transported via helicopter.

Muniz-Colon was issued traffic infractions at the scene for failed to yield the right of way at intersection, and back seat passenger age 4-6 with no-or inappropriate-restraint system.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
